Whereas the Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization (FSO) offers the highest level of auditor training and auditing from the bottom of The Bridge up through OT VII, the delivery of OT VIII, the most advanced OT level available, is entrusted to the Flag Ship Service Organization (FSSO). This church is located aboard a ship, the 450-foot motor vessel Freewinds. This ship forms an ideal religious retreat off the crossroads of society where full attention can be devoted to spiritual advancement. Parishioners normally stay for several weeks to receive OT VIII and also to take special training courses which help a person enhance his abilities as an OT. This setting makes an ideal environment, far from everyday distractions, for the delivery of these advanced spiritual services.
Although originally conceived and established to minister the highest level of auditing, Scientologists at any point on The Bridge may now visit the Freewinds and receive a series of specialized courses in Scientology religious doctrine to further orient one as a spiritual being.
The Freewinds also serves as an international meeting place, holding religious conventions and seminars for Scientology staff and parishioners. Church staff frequently arrange gatherings for Scientology parishioners from a particular area (such as Germany, Mexico or England) to congregate aboard the Freewinds for several days and participate in religious services.
